First as a visual artist and second as a musician when improvising I would hope for a sense of sincerity. When creating I expect to lay something out and feel right about it. Not necessarily good, but right. I have been wondering what it is that makes that sincerity happen or what it is that makes something feel right.
I want to be able to feel something. I want to be able to relate to something-an event, a person, a taste, etc...
I had this teacher for a few semesters who everyone thought was looney-tunes because he would compare a mark on a page to "one time when he was picking spinach with his friend joe" and always had a story to tell and relate to what we were doing and thinking about. I benefited greatly from what he was saying. He was able to look at something and relate! That is so neat! I think when you really start to question what you are doing, the decisions you are making, things can get exciting. How do I travel around the space (notes), What would it feel like if I reached my hand in the space(song). So maybe I want to be able to keep going with improvising, to get to a place and keep creating-to keep learning.
I think mostly about how I travel around something. Whether visual art or with music, reading, whatever.. I think about how I fit in that space-where I enter, how I react and where I go to next.
Improvising is definitely a reaction, sometimes to something very specific and sometimes it comes from some place far away. But I think it always comes from what we know. So I would hope to extend that knowledge outward. Specifically within my own work I look for what excites me and try to put that on paper or when I am playing. I use rhythm most often. I think about how my arm is moving, how my thoughts are being put down onto paper...And I think that if I myself am really into what I am doing and am excited about it, it will translate to the viewer-honesty.
I think the same can be said about music-improvising-playing.
I think with improvisation -music/drawing/painting there is a sense of urgency that is revealed. There is an immediacy that helps involve not only yourself, but everyone else who is able to experience it-cooool.
